Dodging and burning your images through curves adjustment layers is a great way to ensure that the toning you're applying is actually consistent with your source photograph. On coloured lighting shots like this you can also add colour through the colour channels in your curves adjustment layer, this enables you to colour the shadows and highlights to match the rest of the image.
