My most advanced lighting techniques are now available online!

I've been fortunate enough to present my lighting workshops to students all over the world, but not everyone has had the ability to attend. Until now.

My most advanced lighting setups, theories and techniques have been a part of my lighting workshops for nearly a decade and now they're all accessible via online one-2-one video sessions with myself.

Online Workshops - What’s Involved?

One of my most popular options for online education has been these online workshops. These sessions are exactly like my in-person workshops in that I teach you everything I would normally teach at the events, plus you get all the PDF workbooks, lighting diagrams, kit lists and Lightroom presets, we simply skip on the actual shooting itself. I currently run 6 workshops and you can see more info about each of them listed below.

Which workshop is best for you?

All of my traditional lighting workshops are now accessible online and they cover techniques including how to use coloured gels, working in small home studios, how to achieve soft pastel looks, using projectors and my very popular new cinematic lighting techniques for photographers.

Cinematic Studio Lighting Workshop

This course will teach you how cinematographers tell a story in a single frame using elements like depth, shape, contrast, motivation and atmosphere. I'll also share several popular cinematic lighting techniques that have been adapted by me for use with our standard studio lights and modifiers. Also, you'll learn how to build numerous mini-sets that enable you to bring the location to you, even in smaller home-studio spaces.

Included with this lighting workshop…

  • Comprehensive 60+ page PDF of workshop notes

  • Studio lighting kit list

  • All 3D lighting diagrams for setups

  • 16 Lightroom Presets specifically for the lighting setups taught in this workshop

This gelled lighting workshop outlines not only the basics of studio lighting, but also introduces some more advanced gelled lighting techniques that includes my classic orange and blue ‘gelled edge’ look, but also the slightly trickier ‘gelled key & fill’ look too.

Included with this lighting workshop…

  • Comprehensive PDF of workshop notes

  • Studio lighting kit list including bracket and clamp recommendations

  • All 3D lighting diagrams for lighting setups

  • 15 Lightroom Presets specifically for the lighting setups taught in this workshop

The Art of Projection Workshop

Projectors are one of the most powerful, affordable and under-utilised lighting modifiers available today. Projectors have the ability to introduce any colour, shape, design or background to our shots and all of this can be instantly changed as many times as you like during a photoshoot.

In this workshop I share 4 very different lighting setups that utilise projectors as their main light source. Once you’ve mastered the basics of these 4 techniques, any number of setups becomes available as a result.

Included with this lighting workshop…

  • 30+ page PDF of workshop notes

  • Studio lighting kit list including instructions on DIY modifiers

  • All 3D lighting diagrams for lighting setups

Creatively Simple Lighting Workshop

CSL online.jpg

This workshop is often referred to by as my ‘Pastel Gels Workshop’ and has been one of my most popular due to it teaching you how to work with softer, more subtle colours. Along with shooting with pastel gels, this workshops core principles was always about not letting a lack of kit, or space hold back your creativity. In fact, this workshop specialises in being as creative as possible. but with very limited kit and everything taught here can be achieved in spaces as small as a home studio.

The other key part of this workshop is the teachings behind my ‘hierarchy of light’ principle and for many, myself included, this was a game-changer when it came to understanding and controlling not only coloured light but white light as well.

Included with this lighting workshop…

  • Comprehensive PDF of workshop notes

  • Studio lighting kit-list including instructions on DIY modifiers

  • All 3D lighting diagrams for lighting setups

  • 12 Lightroom Presets specifically for the lighting setups taught in this workshop

BIG Studio Lighting in small Spaces Workshop

BSL online.jpg

Do you ever shoot from home? Are you always fighting with a lack of space to create some of the more creative lighting setups? This may well be the workshop for you then. I specifically wrote this workshop with the ‘home shooter’ in mind and all the lighting setups taught in this workshop can be achieved in spaces as small as 3m x 2m (7ft x 10ft)! Plus, what’s even more impressive is that none of these setups require any specialist or expensive modifiers either, they simply require you to have an understanding of light, which I’ll teach you in this workshop, and with that understanding you can control seemingly complex lighting in very tight spaces, often by using those small spaces to your advantage.

  • 30+ page PDF of workshop notes

  • Studio lighting kit list including instructions on DIY modifiers

  • All 3D lighting diagrams for lighting setups

Online Workshop Client Testimonials

“Jakes Hicks has an ability to break down highly technical and abstract subjects into simple and digestible practical processes. A patient and enthusiastic teacher, Jake peels back the different layers of a technique or problem - first laying out broad strokes, followed by in-depth theory, and finally the minutia and trouble shooting aspects of a technique that are so often overlooked in YouTube videos and other quick hit tutorials. He does this all while keeping you energized and engaged with the subject. I would highly recommend one of his one on one tutorials for a learning experience that is tailored to your needs, experience, and time constraints and delivers great results"

- Luke .C - Buffalo, NY

“I just got a photography studio and need to use strobe lights to my advantage. I saw Jake’s pictures on IG and loved his style and knew that he would be the go to guy on lights and making my images my own. I took the one-on-one workshop on ‘Big Studio Lighting in small Spaces’ workshop with Jake and learned a ton. He answered all my questions. It is well worth the money. Don’t hesitate to do a class with him.”

-Howard - East Coast U.S.A.

“My online session with Jake was not only highly inspirational, but gave me essential tools for taking my photography to the next level. He made sure to tailor the workshop to my personal skill level, and gave me plenty of resources to get started on the skills he taught me. I would recommend these online sessions to all photographers: both emerging and professional; as they have given me insight into advanced work practices that will greatly assist me in my photography journey.”

-Marla B. - Australia

“I have been awe struck by Jake's work and taking his workshop was in some ways a dream come true. I purchased his Gel Lighting Tutorial and meticulously worked through it. I did find that I wanted more and taking a workshop with Jake was the next natural step. I did ask him before what would be more suitable given that I had taken the gelled lighting tutorial. Jake suggested I take the Creative Lighting Workshop and it was awesome. There are a few key principles that are game changing - they alter the way you think about lighting and give you a process which is repeatable thus yielding consistent results. While gel lighting is not easy - Jake's methodologies make it easy to apply the principles and replicate the various lighting setups included as a part of the creative lighting workshop. He also includes a kit list which is minimal and can be used by anyone to create stunning images. I am grateful for taking the workshop and thank Jake for his time.”

-B. Allen. Dallas U.S.A.

"You may be skeptical of doing an online workshop with Jake, but I can tell you: don't be. They are extremely informative. The one-on-one nature allows you to get a really nice look at his bag of tricks. "Ah Ha" revelations are guaranteed. The investment is well worth it!"

-David - Baltimore, USA.

“Had an amazing one on one online session with Jake Hicks! I have looked up to and followed Jake’s work for a long time. He is a standout in the art of laying color and pattern on the lines of the body and I tried to soak up as much knowledge and inspiration as I could from our session. It’s a great time to add knowledge to your toolkit and I am excited to apply everything I learned to my model and equine fine art work. Thank you Jake.”

-Susan - Florida U.S.A.

"I had the chance to join two of Jake´s workshops in person back in 2018. I really wanted to attend the  Art of Projection Worksop in person but it was not possible at that time. I took the chance of booking his online workshop and it was superb as the ones we had in Amersham.

Even though we didn´t shoot anything in person, his way of explaining the setups with diagrams and step by step images made more than up for this. I am so hyped to try some of these soon.

Many thanks Jake and see you in the next workshop"

-A. Andreev, Sweden.

"An online workshop with Jake Hicks is time and money well spent. Jake is not only a master of his craft, he is  masterful in disseminating that information to you in an easy to understand format.

He was kind enough to send me the PDF's for the class ahead of time. This allowed me to have some familiarity with the material and really formulate more in depth questions. In the end, I signed off with a crystal clear understanding of not only what happened on the various shoots, but all of the why's and how's one would need to know. It is in those why's and how's that allow you to build on the foundation of his teachings. Adapting lighting techniques to your own personal scenarios and models, creating images that embody your voice, your style, and your essence. I am very much looking forward to the next online workshop."

-Philip Short - Atlanta, Georgia USA

I tried working with gels but I wasn’t getting the results that I wanted so I decided to take Jake’s online workshop, since he is a master of his craft. His workshop was very personalized. He took the time to understand my photography goals and he patiently answered all my questions, which I appreciated. He provided a wealth of information about gelled lighting in an easy-to-understand format. I’m very happy that I took his workshop, and I can’t wait to try out the techniques that I learned.

 -Sherryl G, NJ USA

Taking Jake Hicks’ Cinematic Lighting Course was something I’ve been meaning to do for some time now and the experience did not disappoint.  Jake took the time to thoroughly go through his setups and process, explaining his experience and problems he had to overcome in order to achieve his final result.  It cannot be understated how valuable his insight was and how much I am looking forward to taking his other online courses!

Kris. M, Las Vegas U.S.A.

“I have been following Jake's work online for many years. I have watched a number of his appearances at various trade shows for Pixapro and always admired his approach to lighting and his way of explaining things.  I have even purchased his Pro Edu workshop on gelled portraits! I have been shooting for many years, and I always feel, no matter how much you know or think you know, learning what someone else knows is always worthwhile.  I have been wanting to check out a one-to-one workshop with Jake for a few years, and finally decided it was time.  Trust me, you will not be disappointed.  Jake is extremely knowledgeable and such a nice guy! He really made me feel like old friends, and held nothing back answering all my questions! BIG Studio Lighting in Small Spaces Workshop really made me think and it put some pieces of the puzzle together for me that I had not even noticed I missed! I can't wait to put all the nuggets of information to work on my next gelled image or next non-gelled image for that matter!”

Kevin B - Florida USA

"Had two amazing and insightful workshops with Jake. I really appreciate these thorough and information-packed online sessions. I learned so much in such a short amount of time. If like me, you are not able to go to Jake’s workshops in person, I highly recommend doing these online one to one sessions. He’s really personable and very generous with his time. I feel inspired to go and brush up on my skills with all I have learned after spending time with him on these one to one workshops.”

-Mathieu D. - Canada

“The workshop is so well structured and thought to mentor us, photographers, many complicated themes in such a simple and understandable way. Loved the workflow of it and appreciate the time i was given by Jake. I asked everything i needed with no hurries or pressure. He simply never stops to surprise me by his creativity and his willingness to teach us all.”

-R. Geitani - Mexico City

“Whereas I immensely enjoyed Jake's in person workshops in the past, the online workshop with Jake was superbe too, and saved me the travel to the UK. Jake made great material available and the course was very interactive. Of course you won't be able to shoot yourself, but having exclusive access to Jake for that time made more than up for this. As usual, Jake was generous with his time and explanation, his education style is second to none.”

-Damian Lampart, Geneva

“Jake, I had such a great time earlier and I want to thank you for making it a comfortable learning experience. - I frequently get intimidated when learning from anyone with a degree of experience as extensive as yours but this online workshop wasted no time getting to content and relatively simple techniques that will completely up-end the way I shoot, and the way I think about light. Jake kept it fun, interesting, and informative - I simply cannot wait to try some of these methods this weekend!"

-Mark. G - St. Louis U.S.A

"Jake is not only a master at his craft but is also a great teacher. During my 1 on 1 session, his photo breakdowns were easy to understand, and I can't wait to get into the studio and apply what I learned!"

-Eli - Texas USA

"I have attended many courses over the years, but Jake Hicks workshop's have been the best, exciting and most informative of all!

You will learn a lot from his courses. Very friendly and professional.

- Khalid Kobe Ikram U.K.

“Thoroughly enjoyed the Big Studio Lighting workshop. While not new to photography, I am new to studio photography and so I joined the workshop with a little trepidation. I needn’t have worried as Jake’s style coupled with the content and pace was excellent. I really enjoyed his easy-going nature, ability to understand my capability and adjust his teaching appropriately. It was a lot to take in (of course, I’m new to this!) but he delivered the workshop in a way that triggered my fascination in the manipulation of light and my understanding (and respect!) of the techniques involved to get these amazing images. I came away not only with some excellent training material but more importantly the feeling I could take what I learnt and apply it. Very important to me when investing in training.

Highly recommend Jake’s course, you will not be disappointed.”

-M. Phippen. Devon U.K.

"Jake has done it yet again. The Cinematic Studio Lighting online workshop was another eye-opener. His seemingly never-ending quest to find new and exciting ways to incorporate color into photography has led to this juicy whopper of a workshop. This is beyond just using gels to add color and isn't filled with your typical photography lighting techniques. They will make your mind race with new and exciting ideas. Jake's attention to detail and thorough explanations allow you to easily absorb the information provided. Add in Jake's easy-going and friendly demeanor you'll just want to fly over and have a pint with him. Add this workshop to your shortlist immediately!"

-D. Webb - Baltimore, USA.

“Working with Jake is a delight. He personalises each workshop to suit your current skill level, so that it is understandable for where you’re currently at in your photography journey.  His dedication to finding affordable yet effective equipment also makes sure that you’re not going to invest in something that would inhibit the techniques. Jake is friendly, attentive, and a great teacher. I would wholeheartedly recommend trying one of his personalised, one-on-one workshops!”

-Marla - Australia

"I have been a big fan and follower of Jake's for years.  I originally purchased his "Colored Gel Photography" video class 4 years ago and loved it, and have been watching and admiring his work ever since.  I have always wanted to do one of his live, in-person classes, but given that I live in a different country, this has been more difficult for me.  So I was happy to see that he was offering "online" workshops via Skype/Zoom.  I had been loving the projection images that he's been putting out, and have a few clients that want to try it out, so I reached out and booked his "Art of Projection" online class.  First, Jake very kindly allowed my studio coordinator/photography assistant to participate in the workshop with me.  Second, I must say that the workshop was excellent... no, fabulous!  The projector setups that he demonstrated were fascinating.  Infact, they were much more involved than I had expected... it's so much more than just pointing a projector at a subject.  There's no way I could ever have figured this out on my own!  At the same time, all totally doable, and I can't wait to try out some of the techniques.  I highly recommend Jake Hicks' workshops, whether online or on video or in-person, and I am looking forward to one day being able to meet Jake and attend one of his classes in person.  Thank you, Jake!"

-Irene - Washington DC USA

“Jake’s one-2-one workshops are just terrific! He’s a real photographic innovator, and he’s definitely an excellent mentor, but he is strong on humility and acts as if he’s simply a knowledgeable colleague sharing his experiences and point of view. This makes the experience of interacting with him pleasant yet exciting. Yesterday I completed my second one-2-one workshop with him. I learned a great deal, both from the normal material that Jake usually covers and from his thoughtful discussions and potential solutions for specific issues I raised. More generally, though, his workshops have had the effect of changing the way I think about photography, and inspiring me to apply what I have learned in innovative ways. Thank you, Jake, you are one of a kind!”

Webb .S, Boson U.S.A

"Jake is a true master of his art, not only with his photography skills but his understanding of light  of various types.  This knowledge helped tremendously during our call to help explain how the rotolights (and led lights in general) differ from strobes.  Jake is very down to earth and easy to talk to as well as work with and I truly felt he wanted to help me grow and learn.  I recommend Jake's workshops and one on one sessions so much that I would actually fly out to the UK from the US for one day just to learn with him."

Robert - Washington DC USA

"Jake has a remarkable style of photography and I was absolutely happy when I learned that Jake shares his knowledge in workshops and one-on-one online sessions. Iooked two sessions on the topics gel- and cinematic lighting. Here is a bit of spoiler: My expectations were not only met but exceeded. Jake impressed from the very first moment with his friendly professionalism and was able to convey the various concepts using theoretical principles and practical examples. Jake devoted a lot of time to this, always responded to my questions and was able to answer any unclear points with his comprehensive expertise and on the basis of his broad experience. The numerous hints, tricks and practical tips guide me in my everyday life as a photographer and are helping me to achieve better results. With this in mind, I can recommend Jake's courses without reservation - they are instructive, inspiring and enriching."
