Course: Gels - On Location
Format: In-person, small group (6 person max) training event
Duration: Full Day
Date: September Sunday 8th 2019
Location: Bricklane | London | U.K.
Shooting with gels on location is one of the most requested workshops I’ve had, and now I’ve finally managed to organise the perfect event.
Working with coloured gels in a controlled studio environment is tricky, but add in the unpredictable nature of awkward and unknown locations and you’ve got a whole other dimension of problems to work with.
Locations can add a multitude of benefits to your images in terms of visual interest, depth and unique styling that simply can’t be achieved in a studio. But locations also have their own problems that need to be worked around or with if you are to ensure the best possible image out of any given space.
During this ‘Gels - On Location’ training event I will be teaching you how to overcome some of these problems and they include:
Styling - Making sure you have the best outfits for your shoot ideas and location can easily turn an okay shoot, into a phenomenal one.
Planning your shoot - What are some must-have items that will be invaluable when out on location.
Balancing ambient light and flash photography with gels - Knowing when to block out ‘available light’ and when to capitalise on it.
Working with the environment - How to use the surfaces and features of a room with washes of colour.
Dealing with unwanted surfaces or low ceilings - Turning these concerns into benefits and using the environment to our advantage.
Shooting with gels and full body shots - As gel shooters we often tend to avoid full body shots and the unsightly shadows that brings. Learn how to embrace it.
Lighting modifiers for Gels on Location - I will go over which modifiers you should always have with you for location shoots.
Below are some shots I took recently at the Hacienda space where this workshop will be held. These images are a great example of some of the techniques we’ll be learning and shooting with on the day.

I’ve had my eye open for the perfect location to host this workshop for a while now and recently I finally found exactly what I was looking for. At this event we will be spending our time at the beautiful space at Hacienda Studio. The first time I visited the Hacienda, I knew it was perfect. It’s spacious enough for a small and intimate group of attendees, but not so large as to be boring to light and work with. There are a multitude of smaller spaces and areas to work with the gels and this not only means we’ll have plenty of realistic lighting problems to solve and workaround, but everybody will walk away with tons of stunning images on the day.
The Hacienda Studio is located in the heart of London and is situated just off Brick Lane. Full details on how to reach the studio including recommended public transport routes will be sent direct to you upon booking your space.
The Hacienda is brimming with a multitude of textured surfaces and colours and this very varied location gives us the opportunity to work with a great number of very real problems when shooting with gels on location. Modifiers, gel choice and approach will all change based on the surface you’re dealing with so this location is a perfect training ground for us to cover as much as possible.
As with all of my training events, this workshop will be an opportunity for you to learn and walk away with the skills and knowledge to shoot your own campaigns and models shoots on location. But on top of all the training, you will of course get plenty of time with our model on the day and you are free to share your images for all non-commercial uses. This includes both online and offline portfolios as well as sharing them across all of your social media platforms.
The cost of the event includes the full day of hands-on and in-person training, plus a light lunch along with snacks and teas and coffees. The cost of the day does not include any travel or accommodation costs that you may incur.
I will be bringing and shooting with a bunch of flashes so you won’t need to bring your own lighting. I recommend you bring a camera that has a manual mode and a hotshoe so you can trigger the flashes. Feel free to bring as many lenses as you want on the day, but a 50mm, 85mm or portrait zoom lens like a 24-70mm would be perfect. You will have plenty of time to shoot, so if you also want to bring any ‘art lenses’ like a Lensbaby, Lomo or vintage lens, you will have the opportunity to switch lenses during the setups too.
I want to make it clear that this is a training event and as such all skill levels are welcome. If you’ve shot with your camera in manual mode before and you’ve shot with off-camera flash in the past, you’ll be fine at this event. I will set up the lighting and explain what I’m doing the whole time. When it is your turn to shoot, I will be there with you the whole time to assist and advise you if you need it. At no point will you be split up and be left to your own devices so I assure you that great images from this event are all but guaranteed, no matter your skill level.
I can’t wait to meet you there, but if you have any questions a all then please feel free to reach out and let me know via my contact page here
