Jake Hicks Photography - Post Production Workshop

I've spent a long time working on this one and I know quite a few of you have been asking if and when I was planning on running some Post Production Workshops. Well I've finally finished compiling all the information, writing all the notes, organised all the Lightroom Presets and categorised all the Photoshop Actions.

My complete Post Production Workflow Workshop is finally here.

My Post-Pro Workshops are going to be an entire day of face-to-face learning about absolutely everything that I do to my images to ensure they look editorial ready in the most effective and efficient way possible.

I go over everything from Lightroom import and all the colour adjustments and enhancements I do in there right through to my Photoshop workflow including professional skin retouching techniques and colour toning application.

I've been using Photoshop since Version 4 in 1996 and I've been using Lightroom since the Beta so I'd consider myself fairly well versed in most aspects of these incredibly powerful pieces of software. It's no exaggeration to say that my work would not have seen the success it has had it not been for these fundamental everyday tools in my commercial career.

I've thankfully had the fortune to build a signature photographic style with my bright and bold coloured gel shots and although I am as meticulous as I possibly can be regarding getting it right in-camera, the tonally flat modern day Raw file means that I have to know a huge number of tips and tricks in Photoshop and Lightroom to ensure I extract the best possible image from that file.

"It's no surprise that our raw files often look flat and unimpressive when we open them up for the first time. What happened to that awesome contrast and stunning colour saturation we saw on the little screen on the back of the camera!? It's a normal reaction and you're not alone if all you want to do in your post-production is to get the raw file looking like it did on the LCD."

The workshop will start off with the Lightroom process I use first. Here I will go over everything I do to maximise the colours of the raw file before the export into Photoshop. It's important to do as much of the colour work here as you can as in Lightroom you are working with the entirety of the data that your raw file has to offer. In In Lightroom I will also go over the presets that I have built for my gelled lighting shots. Each and every attendee will also receive all of these as well and remember because they're a preset in Lightroom they can all be customised and tailored to your specific needs later on. From here I will discuss the exporting options for highly saturated images and getting your images ready for Photoshop.

Later on in the morning we will take a general look at some useful techniques that can be implemented in all types of studio photography not just gelled fashion shots. In this section I will look at quick and easy dodge and burn techniques along with efficient skin retouching and sharpening actions. These Photoshop techniques can be extremely useful if you are looking to do minimal but effective post-pro to larger numbers of images like studio portrait shoots and weddings. Again all of the actions for this section will be provided to all attendees.

Comprehensive fully illustrated step-by-step PDFs will also be provided on each of the techniques so you can concentrate on learning rather than scribbling down notes.

Comprehensive fully illustrated step-by-step PDFs will also be provided on each of the techniques so you can concentrate on learning rather than scribbling down notes.

In the afternoon we will knuckle down to the deep-dive post production techniques of getting high-end commercial images magazine ready. Here I will go through each and every step I take in my Photoshop workflow. Some of these steps include more advanced dodging and burning, localised colour adjustments, editorial skin retouching and some advanced sharpening techniques to name but a few. Rest assured no secrets will be hidden and I will be answering all of your questions throughout the day. As before, each of the advanced Photoshop steps in the afternoon will be covered by my Photoshop actions that every attendee will walk away with at the end of the day.

Of course everybody is welcome to take notes throughout the day but I have also written all of the steps and techniques down in easy to navigate illustrated PDF files which everybody can take away with them to keep at the end of the day too.

This will be an intensive day and I very much look forward to seeing some of you there very soon.

Incase you didn't have time to read all that, here's a really short promo video about what I'll be covering on the day.

What's Included in the Course?

A full day from 10:00am to 5:00pm of face-to-face Photoshop and Lightroom with Jake Hicks. Lunch is included.

Some of the topics covered on the day will be:

  • Advanced colour management in Lightroom

  • Professional skin retouching in Photoshop

  • Some of the topics covered on the day are:

  • Advanced colour management in Lightroom

  • Professional skin retouching

  • Local and global sharpening

  • Dodging & Burning with colours

  • Colour toning and a lot more.

Everything in my digital process will be explained step by step, no secrets will be held back and there will be plenty of time for you to ask questions specific to your own digital workflow as we go along.

Plus, everybody on the day will walk away with:

Over 15 of my Photoshop Actions including both my studio portrait actions and my professional editorial actions.

Over 30 of my Lightroom Presets that I use for both my commercial portraits and my coloured gel work.

Over 50 pages of fully illustrated PDF notes on each of my key techniques outlined during the day.

What do I Need to Bring Along?

A laptop (and power supply)- It doesn't need to be the most powerful machine around and if it can run Photoshop and Lightroom then it will be fine for the course.* - If you don't have a laptop then don't feel like you can't attend - We've had plenty of people attend with their desktop computers too.

You will need to have Photoshop and Lightroom already installed - They don't need to be the latest and greatest versions and Photoshop CS6 and above will be fine as well as Lightroom 4 and beyond.

A stylus and tablet is probably recommend but it's down to your personal preference. I will be using both mouse and tablet throughout the day.

A USB to transfer my files to your laptop and to take away the days presets, actions and PDFs.

*It's worth pointing out that I am not adverse to people attending without laptops. I know I have previously been asked if people don't own laptops can they still come to watch and take notes. I am happy for you to do this but please understand that this will still be a full priced place.

Plus attendees of my previous workshops will also receive a saving of £50 when they sign up to my Post-Pro Workshops.

UPDATE

So the first Post-Pro Workshop has come and gone and I'm very pleased to announce that everything went extremely well and as planned :)

We had a very enthusiastic full house of attendees for our premiere post-pro event and although we had tons to cover we managed to get through it all in a timely manner. Thanks again to everybody that came along and I'm so pleased to hear that you all learnt so much.

Here's some behind the scenes photos courtesy of Simon the studio owner and a few words about what the attendees thought about the experience:
